More Than 550 Households to Receive Improved Drinking Water

The quality of drinking water in more than 550 households and nearly 140 businesses in Truro will be improved thanks to a Canada-Nova Scotia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund investment.

Federal and provincial funding of $868,802 was announced today, March 5, by the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia. The Town of Truro will fund the balance of the project costs upon formal acceptance of the agreement.

The project includes the design and installation of a new water main between Wade Road and Robie Street, with a connection to the Lower Truro Road water main. Along with improved drinking water, the households and businesses will also have increased fire protection and improved service reliability.

"The real value of this investment goes far beyond its dollar amount," said Jamie Muir, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "By investing in projects such as today's infrastructure project, we are helping to improve the quality of life through safe drinking water and reliable water systems."

"Canada's government is pleased to invest $434,401 to improve Truro's water distribution system", said MP Bill Casey, on behalf of Peter MacKay, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "Over the past year, we have demonstrated our commitment to getting things done for all Canadians, including people here in Truro."

The infrastructure program supports community infrastructure improvements, such as water, wastewater, and solid-waste management.

"This announcement is great news for our town," said Bill Mills, mayor of Truro. "This investment will have a great impact on the well-being of our town and will help ensure that residents will continue to receive a safe and reliable supply of drinking water."

The $111-million, six-year Canada-Nova Scotia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation and the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities are members of the program management committee.
