Amendments to Incompetent Persons Act and Justices of the Peace Legislation

Justice

Amendments have been introduced by Justice Minister Murray Scott to update the language of several pieces of legislation. The amendments replace outdated language with modern terminology that meets today's standards.

"This legislation was written decades ago using language that has become unacceptable in our society," said Mr. Scott. "These amendments are an important step to help ensure language in legislation is up-to-date and respectful."

Amendments to update language are being made to the Incompetent Persons Act, Building Societies Act, Companies Act, Inebriates Guardianship Act, Limitations of Actions Act, Married Women's Deeds Act, Married Women's Property Act, Partition Act, Partnership Act, Rural Telephone Act, and Trustee Act.

The Justices of the Peace Act is also being amended to increase the retirement age for presiding Justices of the Peace from 65 to 70 years of age. This will make their retirement age the same as the retirement age for Provincial Court judges.
