Help Stop Illegal Grass Fires

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Co-operation is needed from everyone to manage the growing problem of grass fires.

"Volunteer firefighters are working at capacity, fighting an unusually high number of grass fires and need Nova Scotians' help," said Natural Resources Minister David Morse."With the small amount of snowfall this past winter, grass is dry and fires are spreading quickly, threatening wildlife, forests and infrastructure."

Open fires, including grass fires, cannot be lit without a permit. The fire season is underway and burning permits are required for all open fires provincewide. The fire season normally extends until Oct. 15.

Starting a fire without a permit can result in a fine of up to $500, six months in jail, or both.

Landowners should also contact their municipal government office to see if any additional permits are required in their region.

More information on provincial burning permits is available at local Department of Natural Resources offices.

Forest fires can be reported by calling 911 or toll-free at 1-800-565-2224.
