Province Honours Campground Host Weekend

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotia Provincial Parks' volunteer campground hosts are being recognized with a Campground Host Weekend from June 22 to 24 in Battery Provincial Park, St. Peter's, Richmond Co.

Department of Natural Resources began the host program in 1996 and, by 2006, there were 62 volunteer hosts in selected provincial parks. The Campground Host Weekend will bring together hosts to share stories and experiences and to give new hosts the opportunity to meet the experienced volunteers.

"The goal of the host program is to provide excellent levels of customer service within the Nova Scotia Parks system," said Natural Resources Minister David Morse. "By creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere, campground hosts offer a service that cannot be bought at any price."

Being a campground host is a unique opportunity to enjoy and spend time in Nova Scotia's finest parks and to meet people from all over the world.

Hosts help fellow campers by offering helpful information about the facilities and programs offered in the park and surrounding area. They share knowledge of many off-the-beaten-track places with first-time visitors to the province, as well as with those who return again and again.

David and Shirley Whiston have been hosts at parks throughout the province for 10 years.

"We love Nova Scotia and the provincial parks are so special," said Mrs. Whiston. "Before we start camping each year, we collect information and maps from tourist centres and community papers to put together a list of events and festivals."

"We enjoy giving campers a personal touch," said Mr. Whiston. "We have met people from around the world."

Park staff benefit from the positive feedback from visitors and having more time to attend to maintaining high quality park facilities. Visitors receive a total holiday experience that encourages some to stay longer, and leave with pleasant memories of a unique holiday.
