Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotians have more than 100 reasons to enjoy the summer sunshine in provincial parks, thanks to the Parks are for People program co-ordinated by the Department of Natural Resources.

"There are more than 100 events taking place this summer in provincial parks throughout Nova Scotia," said Natural Resources Minister David Morse. "Many people and organizations have come together to create events that showcase Nova Scotia's natural beauty as part of the Parks are for People program."

Various events include hiking through hardwood forests, exploring ancient fossil cliffs, scavenging for treasures at family picnics and paddling the coastline. There are events for all interests and fitness levels.

Many Canada Day events are part of the Parks are for People program. A Canada Day Family Picnic will take place in Petersfield Provincial Park, Cape Breton County on Sunday, July 1. Festivities include opening ceremonies, children's bicycle parade and live entertainment with dancers and musicians. Supervised games for children, face painting, a dunk tank, food and displays are only some of the attractions at the picnic, which is sponsored by the Westmount Canada Day Committee.

Join the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club on Sunday, July 8, for a moderate 10-kilometre guided trail walk in Dollar Lake Provincial Park, Halifax County. Participants are asked to bring a lunch and lots of water, and to meet at the boat launch parking lot.

Sunday, July 15, will be a day of sun, sand, games and prizes at the Annual Summerville Family Beach Party at the provincial park in Queens County. Activities include relay races for the kids, ice cream-eating contests, sand sculpturing for all ages, beach volleyball and much more. The rain date is July 22 and the event is sponsored by the Region of Queens Municipality.

"Last year over 25,000 people took part in park events all around the province," said Mr. Morse. "This year we invite everyone to join in the fun and experience some of the jewels our provincial parks have to offer."

The Parks are for People program is a co-operative effort by government agencies, recreation clubs, community organizations and interested individuals and is co-ordinated by the Department of Natural Resources.

Events take place in the provincial parks, nature reserves, wilderness areas and on Crown lands. Most events are free and some require advance registration.
