Infrastructure Program Invests in Trenton Storm-water Project

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

Households in Lowdens Brook area of Trenton, Pictou Co., will have reduced flooding thanks to funding through the Canada-Nova Scotia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.

The governments of Canada and Nova Scotia announced today, Oct. 13, pending environmental assessment approval, funding of more than $96,000 for this project. After the environmental assessment is approved, the Town of Trenton will provide $48,000, the balance of funding for the project.

The project represents the first phase of Trenton's multi-phased storm-water management plan. The work will include dredging to improve the flow into Lowdens Brook. This will enable the down-stream culvert to work more efficiently, which will help reduce flooding.

"Our government is committed to helping build safer communities and enhancing infrastructure," said Jamie Muir, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "This project is another example of the federal, provincial and municipal governments working in partnership to make improvements in our communities."

"The federal government is getting things done for the people of Trenton," said Peter MacKay, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "The federal investment of more than $48,000 will mean that the town is better able to manage the collection and discharge of storm water and thereby reduce flooding."

The Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund supports sustainable community-infrastructure improvements, such as water, wastewater and solid-waste management.

"Today's announcement is good news," said Shannon MacInnis, mayor of the Town of Trenton. "Partnering with the federal and provincial governments makes it possible to develop a higher quality of municipal services for our community."

Today's investment is part of the $133-million, six-year Canada-Nova Scotia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund, which is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation and the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities are members of the program management committee.
