Strait Regional School Board Approves New Bylaws

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

By a vote of 9 to 3, the Strait Regional School Board voted Wednesday, Nov. 7, to approve an amended set of procedural bylaws as directed by Minister of Education Karen Casey.

"I am pleased that the members of the Strait Regional School Board have complied with my directives," said Ms. Casey. "It is now incumbent on them to demonstrate, by their behaviour, that they are acting in the best interests of Strait area students, whose welfare remains our chief concern."

On Oct. 3, the minister wrote a letter to the board expressing her concern about recent actions of board members and interaction with each other, staff and the community.

In that letter, she directed the board to amend its code of ethics to emphasize respectful behaviour and confidentiality, which was done on Oct. 17, and its board procedural bylaws dealing with meeting absences and maintaining quorums.

An initial deadline of the end of October was extended to Nov. 7, the next scheduled meeting.
