Cape Breton Organizations Receive Funding from Department

Tourism, Culture and Heritage (Dec. 2003 - Jan. 2011)

What do a theatre, drum festival and motorcycle rally have in common? They all bring people from near and far to celebrate uniquely Nova Scotia experiences and they all got a boost from the province today, Nov. 14.

Recently appointed Tourism, Culture and Heritage Minister Bill Dooks announced more than $50,000 in funding for the Savoy Theatre, Cape Breton International Drum Festival and 2008 Atlantic Harley Owners Group Rally during visits to Glace Bay and Sydney today.

"Culture and tourism play significant roles in the well being of our communities," said Mr. Dooks. "Today's investments will help to strengthen the quality of life in our communities for residents and tourists alike."

The Savoy Theatre has hosted an array of cultural performances for more than 80 years. Built in 1920, it is an important feature of the cultural landscape in Glace Bay and its longevity is a testament of its importance to the people of the area. The theatre is about to launch a fund-raising effort to ensure its long-term sustainability. A $25,000 investment from the Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage will give it a leg-up for the campaign launch.

The Cape Breton International Drum Festival will take place in Sydney on April 26-27. It includes cultural and rhythmic performances by some of the best drummers in the world, as well as workshops, networking opportunities and jam sessions. A $10,000 investment will help market the event through a new website, radio, television and print advertising in Atlantic Canada and a special advertising feature in the New York Times, one of Nova Scotia's target gateway markets.

The 2008 Atlantic Harley Owners Group Rally will be hosted by Sydney, with events around the island, July 16-19. The rally will give motorcycle enthusiasts a chance to visit new locations and experience local culture. The province's $20,000 investment will help market the event through print advertising in Atlantic Canada and a consumer trade show in Moncton. In addition, Biker TV, which broadcasts in New England markets, will promote the event for six weeks.
