Taser Policies Reinforced

Justice

The need to ensure that people who may use Tasers on the job are aware of policies and procedures is being reinforced by the Justice Department.

"We have highly trained and skilled law enforcement, correctional workers and sheriffs in our justice system," said Justice Minister Cecil Clarke. "However, given recent events, we are asking that all those authorized to use Tasers review the policies and procedures for safe and proper use."

A governance standard outlining appropriate use of Tasers is in place for law-enforcement agencies, and correctional workers and sheriffs are guided by well-established policies and procedures.

Other jurisdictions have launched inquiries or investigations into Taser use, and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and the Canadian Police Research Centre will conduct a study on the use of Tasers in law enforcement in 2008.

"We have confidence that these devices are being used appropriately in our province, however we will monitor the developments and upcoming research," said Mr. Clarke.
