Shubenacadie Wildlife Park Gets Official Designation Department of Natural Resources February 25, 2008 12:41 PM

The Nova Scotia government is making changes to enhance and better protect the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park.

Sixty-five hectares of Crown land is being added to the Wildlife Park, formerly part of the surrounding Shubenacadie Wildlife Management Area. Home to hundreds of animals, it provides unique and educational experiences for thousands of visitors every year.

Three-hundred-thirty-one hectares of land will now officially be called the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park. Although the area has been commonly known as this for years, the official wildlife park designation will prohibit activities such as hunting, trapping, forestry or mining. The designation accurately reflects the uses of the area for wildlife exhibits, research and biodiversity conservation.

The park includes lands that were originally designated as a game sanctuary and a wildlife management area.

The surrounding 330 hectares of land, the Shubenacadie Wildlife Management Area, is largely private land. Regulatory changes will give those landowners more control over their land.

The adjustment to boundaries and updated regulations of the wildlife park make it easier to provide a safe place for visitors and staff and takes into account the needs of the private landowners of the Wildlife Management Area.
