Crowdis Mountain Septage Facility Report Released

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Residents in Middle River, Victoria Co., now have a cleaned-up area at the site of the former Crowdis Mountain septage facility.
The Department of Environment released its final report to the community liaison committee today, April 9.

"The department committed to remove the solids and liquids, implement a groundwater and surface-water monitoring program, and site reclamation," said Mark Parent, Minister of Environment. "I am pleased to say we've accomplished that for the people of Middle River.

"I also want to thank the members of the community liaison committee for their hard work and support to ensure proper environmental management of the former septage lagoon."

The site cleanup was complete in late November. About 4,250 tonnes of material was disposed of at approved composting facilities.

Surface and ground-water testing done throughout the cleanup concluded that there was no impact on MacDonald Brook.

During the site reclamation, old oil contamination was found. The property owners will be responsible for assessing the site to determine the most appropriate action.

"The oil-contaminated soil is a different issue than the removal of the septage waste," said Mr. Parent. "The department has advised the property owners of their responsibilities under the Environment Act.

"An assessment of the site can not begin until it becomes accessible later this spring. The results of the assessment will determine our next steps."

The department agreed in July 2006 to site reclamation of the septage lagoon site, based on the recommendations of the community liaison committee.
