Gaelic Day at Highland Village

May marks Gaelic Awareness Month for Nova Scotia as the province celebrates more than 200 years of Gaelic language and culture.

Highland Village Museum in Iona, Victoria Co., will observe the month with a guest presentation by Lewis MacKinnon, CEO for the Office of Gaelic Affairs, on Thursday, May 1, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Mr. MacKinnon will talk about the history of Gaelic Awareness Month and its importance in bringing public attention to the vital Nova Scotia heritage. A céilidh session will follow with songs and stories from Mr. MacKinnon and interpretation staff Jim Watson and Joanne MacIntyre and friends.

Nova Scotia shares a heritage of language and kinship with Gaelic Scotland, but also has its own history with both innovation and preservation of story, song, dance, music and material culture, to become distinct in character as a Canadian identity.

The Highland Village Gaelic Awareness Month Céilidh welcomes all ages to this fun and informative afternoon activity.

Highland Village is a living history museum and cultural centre in central Cape Breton, overlooking the Bras d'Or Lakes. Through its 11 historic buildings, representing eras from the time of immigration to the early 20th century, the village is dedicated to interpreting the life and times of Gaelic Nova Scotia and supporting its cultural community. It is part of the Nova Scotia Museum family.
