Graves Island Provincial Park Open House

An open house to discuss the future of Graves Island Provincial Park, Lunenburg Co., is being held on Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. at the park entry building.

The Department of Natural Resources is looking for input on a draft plan for redevelopment of the coastal campground.

"Anyone with an interest in the park is encouraged to attend the open house," said Trevor Franker, a senior planner at the Department of Natural Resources. "People are invited to share their favourite park experiences while reviewing and discussing the draft park redevelopment concept."

While Graves Island undergoes many changes, the priorities of the park remain resource conservation and recreational development. Last year, about five hectares of dead or dying white spruce were cut as part of an ecological restoration project to promote a more diverse forest ecosystem. There are also many upgrades needed to keep the park fully operational.

The Department of Natural Resources wants the redevelopment of the park to reflect the changing recreational opportunities that are sought by park users.

"The redevelopment of Graves Island is a long-term project, and the department is looking to park visitors and local residents to help shape it," said Mr. Franker. "All input will be considered before the initial phase of the park redevelopment, which is expected to begin following this year's camping season."

Graves Island Provincial Park is located at 230 Graves Island Rd., East Chester on Route 3, about five kilometres south of Highway 103, Exit 7.
