Atlantic 4-H Members Learn Livestock Skills

Agriculture

Sixty 4-H members from across Atlantic Canada will learn new skills with their dairy and beef calves to compete for top honours at the annual Eastern Breeders Incorporated 4-H Showcase.

The event will take place Wednesday, June 25 to Friday, June 27 at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Grounds in Bible Hill.

"These youth are our future farmers and this seminar will teach them the technical skills they can use on the family farm," said Brooke Taylor, Minister of Agriculture. "This training will help them excel as agricultural leaders in their local communities and further afield."

The 4-H members will learn about show preparation for dairy and beef calves, marketing of cattle, livestock judging, how bulls are chosen for the artificial insemination unit and how they are cared for while there. The members will also learn about the latest techniques in showmanship, clipping, display design and herd management.

"For 19 years, Nova Scotia's 4-H program has partnered with Eastern Breeders Incorporated to provide specialized livestock training opportunities for Atlantic 4-H members who are 14 years of age and have a minimum two years experience with dairy and beef projects," said Arthur Pick, Acting Manager, 4-H and Rural Organizations.

The public is invited to attend the beef and dairy show at 9:30 a.m on Friday, June 27. Awards will be presented to winners in each class level.
