Green Economy Important to the Future of Nova Scotia

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Helping to solve the world's environmental challenges while growing Nova Scotia's economy is key to the future of the province. This is the message that Environment Minister Mark Parent delivered to business and community leaders in Yarmouth today, July 16.

Yarmouth was Mr. Parent's first stop on a province-wide tour to promote the importance of the green economy in Nova Scotia. He spoke to business and community leaders about the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act and the province's vision for environmental and economic prosperity.

"The world is changing and we have to be prepared to adapt to that change," said Mr. Parent. "We have the expertise to build our international reputation with environmental innovations that are not only keeping Nova Scotia clean and green, but are employing our people and growing our economy."

Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Economic Development, is also visiting communities and businesses that are contributing to a green economy for Nova Scotia. Mr. MacIsaac made his first stop in Cape Breton on July 11.

In May, Mr. Parent and Mr. MacIsaac released reports detailing the province's progress towards meeting commitments in the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act and in Opportunities for Sustainable Prosperity, the province's economic growth strategy.

Environmental management and protection is one of government's five immediate priorities. The act sets out 21 far-reaching goals for the province. They range from reduced air emissions and waste, to new energy standards for buildings and increased protection of land and water.

The act is a vital companion to Opportunities for Sustainable Prosperity. It will help the province achieve economic performance at or above the national average by the year 2020 and build a foundation for continued growth.

With the help and support of regional development authorities, Mr. Parent and Mr. MacIsaac will be speaking to business and community leaders this summer in the Annapolis Valley, Sydney, New Glasgow, Bridgewater, and other communities.
