No Charges Expected in Forest Fire

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

The investigation into last month's wildfire in the Porters Lake/Lake Echo area has concluded. No charges will be laid at this time.

As the lead investigator, the Department of Natural Resources gathered and analyzed all evidence. It was determined that there was insufficient evidence after seeking advice from the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service.

"We have not entirely closed this case. As with any investigation, people are encouraged to come forward with any information related to the incident," said John Mombourquette, director of enforcement. "We have identified suspects, but without further evidence we are unable to proceed with charges at this time."

Information on the specifics of the evidence cannot be released unless charges are laid and evidence is presented in court.

Currently, there is also insufficient evidence to lay charges in wildfire in the Tantallon area.

Anyone with information on these or other forest fires in the province are asked to contact their local Department of Natural Resources office.
