Highland Village Hosts Pioneer Day

History and culture will come to life when Highland Village in Iona hosts its annual Pioneer Day on Saturday, Sept. 13.

With interactive and fun events, historical displays and tradition entertainment, Pioneer Day will have a host of family activities.

There will be traditional daily tasks such as quilt making, candle dipping, rug hooking, treadle sewing, soap making and flax processing and weaving, as well as popular pastimes such as horseshoes. a popular rural pastime. And a visit to the historical houses include some country cooking. Food for guests will include corn on the cob and lemonade.

There will also be a spinning frolic and demonstrations of Cash's Carding Mill, moved to Iona and set up as a working exhibit from Irish Cove. The mill will offer a look at how wool was prepared for the spinning wheels and looms in years gone by. A special historical demonstration this year will be Mi'kmaq basket weaving presented Donna Poulette of Eskasoni.

There will be fiddle music and the one-room schoolhouse will feature step-dancing demonstrations to live music. Gaelic singing and storytelling will be featured at the ceilidh in the 186-year-old MacDonald House. A milling frolic will follow as Gaelic singers come together to mill with a traditional blanket cloth woven by staff.

Regular admission prices apply, with activities from noon to 5 p.m.
