Cumberland County Receives Transit Funding

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

Residents of Cumberland County will soon have accessible transit service thanks to $69,910 in funding from the province announced today, Sept. 29.

The Cumberland Transportation Service will receive $40,000 through the Accessible Transportation Assistance Program towards the purchase of two public transit vans. The Community Transportation Assistance Program is investing $29,910 towards the vans' operating costs.

"These transit vans will bring safe, affordable and accessible transportation to Cumberland County communities," said Murray Scott, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, on behalf of Jamie Muir, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "This investment will not only help build a stronger community, but it will also help build a stronger environment and economy."

The Cumberland Transportation Service will provide door–to-door service starting in November.

"We are very excited with this funding announcement," said Barry Patriquin, chair of the Cumberland Transportation Service. "Many people with transportation challenges will now have a viable option. People will be able to get to their doctors appointments, people with disabilities will have a service that is inclusive, and all will have a service that is affordable."

The programs investing in the vans help support non-profit organizations that provide transportation services in rural areas.
