Nova Scotia Businesses Join Anti-litter Campaign

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Nova Scotia businesses are on board with the province's anti-litter campaign, Best Thing You'll Never Do.

Tim Hortons, Wilson Fuel Co. Ltd., and the Nova Scotia Automobile Dealers Association are helping encourage Nova Scotians to visit the website www.bestthingyoullneverdo.ca to take the pledge to never litter. To date, close to 1,600 people have taken the pledge.

"The government is pleased that some private-sector groups have stepped up to the plate to help us spread the message about the litter problem in Nova Scotia," said David Morse, Minister of Environment. "Because of their support, thousands more Nova Scotians will be reminded that littering is bad for the environment and the province's image.

"We are hoping to get more people to sign the pledge and more businesses and organizations to help support our campaign. Working with private sector groups to get the message out about littering is critical to reducing litter in the province."

The campaign, started in March by the Department of Environment and RRFB Nova Scotia, is raising awareness about the litter problem in Nova Scotia.

The department announced the results of the 2008 litter survey report in February. The report showed a 21 per cent increase in litter from four years ago.

"We are committed to eliminating litter in the province as part of the work we do to reduce, re-use, recycle and recover resources," said Bill Ring, CEO of RRFB Nova Scotia. "As we continue our efforts to improve Nova Scotia's environment, economy and quality of life, we are delighted to have business partners that can help support the anti-litter message."

Tim Hortons will display information about the campaign and the web address on digital menu boards. Wilson Fuel Co. Ltd. will put stickers on all garbage cans asking people to take the pledge and hand out re-useable bags for garbage. Participating members of the Automobile Dealers Association will be display posters and hand out re-useable bags when vehicles are serviced.

"Tim Hortons has been a long-time supporter of initiatives that help the environment," said Adam Colburn, local Tim Hortons store owner. "We believe we all have a role to play in keeping our communities clean. We are proud to support the Department of Environment's anti-litter campaign and look forward to working together on future initiatives."
