Government House Has Sole

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

The boots were put to the walls or, more precisely, into the walls at Government House today, April 14, as extensive renovations continue at the historic mansion.

In keeping with an old tradition, Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal workers placed shoes in framed-in sections of the structure before putting up the new walls.

"When Government House was originally constructed, 19th century craftsmen apparently believed that placing shoes near doors and windows warded off evil spirits at entry points," said Bruce Wood, inventory control manager. "Since we found several ladies' shoes in the walls when we dismantled the house, it seems only fair that we put a few back to act as a sort of poltergeist scarecrow."

The department started collecting used shoes in March. Among the donors was Lt.-Gov. Mayann Francis. Eight shoes will be put into the walls of Government House while the remainder will be donated to Adsum House and Dress for Success, two programs that support women in transition.

The original shoes found in the walls have been removed and are being catalogued. It is hoped, they will be returned to Government House where they will be on permanent display.
