Provincial Forest Nursery Receives Funding

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

The provincial forest nursery facility at Strathlorne, Inverness Co., will be able to explore long-term opportunities, invest in necessary upgrades and develop a program to employ seasonal workers, with $1,140,000 in funding over two years from the Community Development Trust Fund.

"There has been a dramatic decrease in harvesting that affects every aspect of our province's forestry industry," said Minister of Natural Resources Carolyn Bolivar-Getson. "We must continue to make smart investments and seize opportunities to ensure our rural economies remain sustainable during this difficult time and for many years to come."

The forest nursery has been a major employer in Inverness County for more than 20 years. Sustainable communities are crucial to the future strength and prosperity of the province.

"We are optimistic that markets will rebound and demand will increase for Nova Scotia's forestry industry," said Ms. Bolivar-Getson. "And when it does, the Strathlorne provincial nursery will have continued operations and trained staff to meet the needs of the silviculture industry."

The Strathlorne nursery project will include a Minister's Community Advisory Committee. The committee will have community representatives as well as experts in the nursery business. It will work with the department to identify and evaluate options and implement necessary changes.

The Community Development Trust Fund, a $34.9-million program established in 2008 by the federal government, is designed to help communities experiencing economic challenges. The fund's priorities are to enhance sustainable prosperity, diversify economic and trade opportunities, improve productivity, innovation and training, assist communities with transition planning, and help workers facing adjustment challenges.
