Environmental Conditions Set For Sydney Terminal

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Construction and operation of the proposed Sydport Container Terminal have been approved by Environment Minister David Morse, subject to strict conditions to protect the environment.

The Laurentian Energy Corporation project successfully completed a provincial environmental assessment in accordance with the Nova Scotia Environment Act. The marine container terminal is planned for Sydport Industrial Park along Sydney Harbour.

The company must follow an environmental management plan approved by the Department of Environment. It will include measures aimed at reducing any effects on groundwater, surface water, air quality, wetlands, wildlife, and habitat. Waste must be minimized and recycled or disposed of properly.

The minister's decision and the conditions of the provincial environmental assessment approval are on the Department of Environment's website at www.gov.ns.ca/nse/ea .

A federal environmental assessment is considering marine-related concerns.
