Extreme Fire Conditions Reported

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotians are urged to take extra caution with open fires today, May 22, and during this weekend.

"The fire weather forecast for today shows significant potential for intense, fast-moving forest fires over much of the province," said Rob Uttaro, Department of Natural Resources supervisor of fire management. "Everyone should take the most prudent precautions, knowing that small flames can lead to serious wildfires."

Hants, Kings, and Cape Breton counties have extreme fire conditions. The province's helicopters are on stand-by in various parts of the province for quick access, if needed.

Nova Scotians who want to burn brush within 305 metres of woods require a provincial burning permit. Starting a fire without a provincial permit can result in a fine of up to $500, six months in jail, or both.

Landowners should contact local Department of Natural Resources offices with questions and check with municipal government offices to learn if additional permits are required.
