Highland Village Museum Opens June 1

Tourism, Culture and Heritage (Dec. 2003 - Jan. 2011)

Highland Village in Iona, Victoria Co., opens for visitors Monday, June 1.

The village overlooks the Bras d'Or Lakes and features 11 period buildings and rare farm animals, including soay sheep and highland cattle. Costumed animators offer interactive learning experiences of Gaelic heritage and culture in Nova Scotia.

Demonstrations of traditional crafts, such as weaving, quilting and rug hooking, will be held along with opportunities to hear customary Gaelic singing and music and take part in traditional céilidhs or gatherings.

The summer will include codfish suppers, candlelight tours, Làithean Sona/Happy Days Living History programs for children and teens, workshops in different aspects of Gaelic culture, a Gaelic folk life school and celebration, and the 48th annual Highland Village Day Concert.

Highland Village Museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until Oct. 19. Admission is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors and $4 for youth, with a family rate at $22.
