Tenders Issued for More Road Improvements

Tenders for 13 projects, valued at $17.5 million, have been called to improve highways, bridges and secondary roads, including work on the Cabot Trail and new passing lanes on Highway 101.

"We're making the most of this construction season with an ambitious plan to improve roads and bridges across the province," said Frank Corbett, acting Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "These projects will result in safer and more efficient roads that will strengthen our communities and support important industries like tourism."

The province recently announced that it expects to spend $325 million on highway construction and major maintenance projects this year, surpassing last year's amount by more than $100 million. A portion of the funding will come from federal stimulus programs.

"This is one of the busiest and most productive construction seasons ever seen in this province, and I thank all of the staff and road builders who are hard at work across Nova Scotia," said Mr. Corbett.

Tenders released today, July 8 are:

• East Petpeswick Road, from Trunk 7 south for 6.1 kilometres, for repaving
• Wellington Dyke Road, from 42 kilometres north of Aboiteau Structure, south for 630 metres, for subgrade, gravelling and repaving
• Cabot Trail, from 11.5 kilometres south of Path End bridge, north for six kilometres, for upgrading
• Highway 101 (Phase 1), Coldbrook to Kingston, from 500 metres east of Black Rock Road underpass, east for 2.16 kilometres for passing lane construction
• Trunk 4, from Lake Shore Drive West east for 4.7 kilometres, for repaving
• Truro Heights Road, from Truro Power Centre north to Route 236 for four kilometres, for repaving
• Lower Truro Road, from Truro Heights Road 1.2 kilometres to the Truro town line, for repaving
• College Road/Main Street, Truro, for 3.7 kilometres to Village Line Avenue, for repaving
• Cabot Trail (Trunk 30), Wreck Cove Bridge at Wreck Cove crossing Morrisons Brook, for repairs
• Cabot Trail (Trunk 30), McDonald Bridge, for bridge deck and bridge rail repairs
• Cabot Trail (Trunk 30), Mill Brook #2 Bridge, for bridge deck and bridge rail repairs
• Route 301, in Oxford, Black River Bridge, for pedestrian overpass construction
• Stewart's Bridge, North River, Colchester Co., for bridge replacement
