Karen Hudson has been appointed as the newest executive director of the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission, effective Sept. 1.

"I wish Ms. Hudson all the best in her new position," said Attorney General and Justice Minister Ross Landry. "Legal Aid is an essential service that not only helps Nova Scotians access legal services, but helps our overall justice system."

Under the Legal Aid Act, the commission can appoint a barrister to be executive director of the commission. The Legal Aid Commission made its selection at its June board meeting.

Ms. Hudson has been with the Legal Aid Commission for 23 years, serving as staff lawyer, managing lawyer and director. Ms. Hudson has guest lectured at Dalhousie law school and has organized and presented at international legal aid and law conferences. She has also served or chaired a number of boards, including Metro Food Bank, Veith House and Alice Housing.

"We are pleased to have a person of Karen Hudson's many achievements take on this leadership role," said Donald Harding, chair of the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission, "We are fortunate to have Karen bring the benefits of her skills and experience to the commission's operations."

Ms. Hudson will succeed Gerard Lukeman, who has held the position since 1997.

The Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission is responsible for legal aid for Nova Scotians and delivers services through 16 community-based law offices and three sub-offices.
