Sherbrooke Village Old Fashioned Christmas Activities Return

Tourism, Culture and Heritage (Dec. 2003 - Jan. 2011)

Old Fashioned Christmas is back at Sherbrooke Village and it's bigger than ever.

After a hiatus for electrical upgrades last year, this year's 14th edition will be a two-weekend event.

"Old Fashioned Christmas has grown so much that it truly belongs to the volunteers and partners who work tirelessly and show their devotion by participating year after year," said Old Fashioned Christmas committee chair Brenda Alexander. "Recognition must also go for the funding support of major sponsors along help from community partners including the St. Mary's Lions Club."

This year's event will take place from Friday, Nov. 27, to Sunday, Nov. 29, and from Friday, Dec. 4 to Sunday, Dec. 6. It will begin with the traditional tree-lighting ceremony at Maple Manor seniors' complex, followed by a candlelight procession that will end at the Sherbrooke Village Performance Centre, where the Kidd Brothers will perform another great family show.

There will be free hot chocolate and snacks, followed by a visit from Santa and a fireworks display. After the fireworks, there will be a free family skate at St. Mary's Recplex and karaoke at the Lions Club for the adults.

Nova Scotia Power will host a holiday light exchange where people can exchange two sets of traditional lights for one set of energy-efficient LED lights.

Other events include craft workshops, wagon rides, craft show and sales, holiday luncheons, horse and wagon rides and children's scavenger hunts.

Saturdays and Sundays will begin with breakfast at the Lions Hall and feature Victorian Teas. Saturday, Nov. 28, there will be two sittings for the Groaning Board and a Courthouse Ceilidh, featuring Roly and Ellie Burton and Lesley Brothers.

On, Sunday, Nov. 29, there will be an Ecumenical Choir Service at St. James Presbyterian Church.

On Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5, the dinner theatre at the Lions Hall will feature the Harbour Players in Heavenly Idol. Juno-nominated, multiple ECMA award winner, singer/songwriter John Gracie headlines the Grand Finale Concert on Dec. 6, including songs from his new album Simply Christmas.
