Seniors at risk of financial, emotional, physical, and other forms of elder abuse will continue to benefit from community-based programs, thanks to financial support from a government funding initiative.

The Departments of Seniors and Justice have renewed their commitment to fund and develop seniors safety programs to a maximum of $20,000 for individual projects .

The programs develop and enhance safety in communities, promote communications between seniors and police, and encourage more contact between seniors and young people to promote respect and positive relationships between generations. The deadline for applications this year is Dec. 22.

Again this year, $270,000 will be awarded. The Department of Seniors contributes $220,000 as part of The Nova Scotia Elder Abuse Strategy: Towards Awareness and Prevention. The Department of Justice contributes an additional $50,000 as part of its crime prevention and reduction strategy.

The seniors safety program grants are one of three funding initiatives offered by the Department of Seniors. The Positive Aging Fund and the Age-Friendly Communities programs are also accepting applications for community-based projects that benefit seniors.

Application information for all three funding initiatives are available on the Department of Seniors website at www.gov.ns.ca/seniors or by calling toll-free 1-800-670-0065.
