Celebrating Agriculture in the Classroom

Farmers across the province are celebrating Agricultural Literacy Week from May 3-7 by reading to students in grades 2 and 3.

"I am pleased to talk to students about Nova Scotia's agriculture sector and its importance to all of us," said John MacDonell, Minister of Agriculture.

"Agricultural Literacy Week helps make farming more real to our younger generation as they meet and talk to farmers and others who are connected to the agriculture industry."

About 70 readers will go into school classrooms across the province to read the agricultural book, Alfalfabet, and talk to students about the industry. The book, with suggested activities to help the teachers and students explore the science and culture of farming, will stay in the classroom.

Mr. MacDonell will visit Maple Ridge Elementary School in Lantz, Hants Co., on Monday, May 3.

"Agricultural Literacy Week brings Nova Scotia farmers right into the classroom so that students can learn more about life on the farm," said Rick Hoeg, agricultural education liaison, Department of Agriculture. "Food production is often in the news these days, and these classroom visits give students a chance to ask questions and learn first-hand from local farmers and others who work in the agriculture industry."

"Having the week dedicated to agricultural literacy is a great opportunity for the farm community," said Richard Melvin, president of Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture. "Talking with students about where their food comes from and the importance of agriculture to Nova Scotia is a valuable lesson for us to share."

Agricultural Literacy Day is sponsored by the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and the Nova Scotia Agricultural Awareness Committee.
