Minister Receives Report from Remediation Monitoring Oversight Board

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

The Remediation Monitoring Oversight Board has submitted its second report on the Department of Environment's performance as the primary regulator of the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens Cleanup Project.

"The clean-up project is large, unique and complex," said Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau. "I appreciate the work the board is doing to monitor our regulatory performance."

Findings from the board show that the department is effectively regulating the project and taking appropriate actions to protect the environment. Mr. Belliveau and staff will review the report before responding to the board.

The Remediation Monitoring Oversight Board was created in January 2008.

The key responsibilities of the Remediation Monitoring Oversight Board include:

  • reviewing project permits and approvals issued by the Department of Environment;
  • reviewing project regulatory issues;
  • providing the public with an opportunity to provide feedback on regulatory issues; and,
  • reporting annually to the minister.

The members of the board are Sinclair Dewis, Edwin MacLellan and Colin Hines.
