Pictou Justice Centre Renovations Have Begun

The Pictou Justice Centre is getting a $2-million renovation that will add another courtroom and enhance service to the public.

Justice Minister Ross Landry visited the Pictou Justice Centre today, June 7, to view the renovations that will also enable staff from the New Glasgow Justice Centre to relocate early next year.

"This government is committed to genuine leadership that's on your side," said Mr. Landry. "These renovations will allow us to improve court services by centralizing them under one roof."

A renovation contract was awarded to PCL Construction of Dartmouth, in March. Renovations to the 25-year-old government-owned building began in April and are expected to be completed in early 2011.

Over the years, air-quality issues have been raised by justice staff in New Glasgow and the relocation will address those concerns.

Both levels of the Pictou Justice Centre are being renovated to include a new courtroom, a judge's office along with conference rooms and improved front counter space.

Full justice services will be offered during the renovations including Supreme and Family Court sittings. Once renovations are completed next year, the Pictou Justice Centre will become home to provincial court sittings.
