Pictou County Receives Crime Prevention Funding

The Pictou County Municipalities Crime Prevention Association will continue to offer its crime prevention services thanks to $20,000 in pilot funding from the province.

Justice Minster Ross Landry made the announcement today, June 7, at the association office.

"I applaud the Pictou County Crime Prevention Association for the important work they do," said Mr. Landry. "This group has managed to bring all municipal crime prevention associations in Pictou County under one umbrella, enhancing the partnerships developed and services offered."

Through community resources, the Pictou County Municipalities Crime Prevention Association promotes and offers free educational programs on topics ranging from bullying to senior safety driving. The programs are offered through partnerships with police agencies in Trenton, Stellarton, Westville, New Glasgow, Pictou and rural Pictou County, and are tailored to the needs of each community.

"This government is committed to making life better for families in every region," said Mr. Landry. "Everyone should feel and be safe at home in Nova Scotia and a crime prevention association such as this one brings us another step closer."

The association was established in October 2006, and consists of a coordinator and 25 volunteers.

"Without this funding, we could not continue to educate Pictou County about crime prevention," said Barb Dewtie, association co-ordinator. "By partnering with the police, we are able to focus on the needs of the communities we serve."
