50-plus Expo Features Opportunities, Entertainment

Seniors (Oct. 2007 - Aug. 2021)

Top notch information and entertainment will headline this year's 50-plus expo at Exhibition Park in Halifax today, June 11 to Saturday June 12.

"The 50-plus expo is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the significant contributions that the seniors of this province make to their communities every day," said Denise Peterson-Rafuse, Minister of Seniors. "Whether you are 50-plus yourself or looking for information for someone else, it's a great way to make aging a more positive, fulfilling experience for anyone."

The expo is the kick off to Seniors' Week, June 11-17 with the theme,"Age-Friendly Communities: Vibrant People, Visible Progress."

"The expo is the perfect way to begin Seniors' Week," said Ms. Peterson-Rafuse. "Retirees are looking for ways to embrace aging and to become an increasingly vital part of communities that are prepared to embrace them."

This year's feature entertainment is Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers, on stage both days at 1:15 p.m. Longtime favourites returning this year include Neville MacKay of My Mother's Bloomers with his entertaining flower arranging presentation, as well as Nova Scotia Idol: the 8th annual Star Search talent competition. Visitors will be moved and inspired during the presentation of the 2010 Remarkable Seniors Awards, which will take place on Saturday at noon.

The event also features more than 100 information and trade exhibits, each offering opportunities and services tailored to older Nova Scotians, and a full schedule of workshops and presentations.

Visitors to the Department of Seniors' exhibit can learn about recent improvements to services and benefits for seniors in Nova Scotia, such as the removal of provincial income tax for those receiving GIS, and learn how to access the benefits.

The 50-plus expo's daily program will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The event's annual dance, taking place on Friday at 8 p.m., will feature the Novelty Salesmen Travelyn Band.

The entire event takes place at Exhibition Park, 200 Prospect Rd., Halifax. Free chartered bus transportation is available at four points within the city to Exhibition Park and back. Please call 902-876-1508 for departure schedules. Tickets are $5 per day and are available at the door.

The expo is a non-profit event and is sponsored by the Department of Seniors and private sector sponsoring partners.
