Elder Abuse Awareness Day June 15

Seniors (Oct. 2007 - Aug. 2021)

Today, June 15, has been proclaimed Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Nova Scotia. It coincides with a worldwide awareness day that brings attention to elder abuse globally.

"As the number of seniors increases each year, and extended families live further apart, it's more important than ever that we work as communities to make sure seniors are safe and protected from abuse, neglect and scams," said Denise Peterson-Rafuse, Minister of Seniors.

The Department of Seniors is supporting eight Elder Abuse Awareness Day activities to encourage Nova Scotians to learn about and take action to ensure seniors are safe from financial, emotional, sexual and physical abuse, and from neglect.

"Public education and awareness have the power to reduce senior abuse and neglect," said Ms. Peterson-Rafuse. "If community members recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse, and know where to get advice, we can all help stop abuse when it occurs."

The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse reports that abuse of seniors is largely under-estimated, under-recognized and under-reported throughout the world. In North America, financial abuse, including scams, is the most commonly reported problem.

It is believed that at least between four per cent and 10 per cent of older adults experience abuse. This rate is known to be higher in certain settings where seniors are more isolated or vulnerable.

The Department of Seniors is sponsoring eight community-led awareness events today throughout the province.

Seniors and family or friends of seniors who need immediate assistance with an abuse situation should call local police.
