Atlantic 4-H members will learn the finer points of livestock showmanship and herd management at the 21st annual Eastern Breeders Incorporated Showcase June 27-29.

The event will be held at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Grounds in Bible Hill.

Seventy-three 4-H members will learn about the latest techniques in show preparation for beef and dairy cattle, marketing, milk recording for the dairy industry, health of the show calf, livestock judging, showmanship, clipping, display design, and herd management.

"The government continues to show genuine leadership by educating young 4-H members to ensure good livestock management practices are applied to family farms," said John MacDonell, Minister of Agriculture. "Our future livestock producers will play a significant role in creating good jobs and growing the province's economy."

After two days of training 4-H members will show their calves in the beef and dairy show on Tuesday, June 29. Awards will be given to winners in showmanship and confirmation, and to members who excelled in session work over the two days of instruction. The public is welcome to attend.

"We take pride in the fact that this is not only a top notch 4-H competitive show but also an effective learning exercise," said Paul Stewart, genetic programs and communications supervisor, Eastern Breeders Incorporated. "We are privileged to work with youth programs and give back some experience and knowledge of our industry. We get to reinforce the 4-H values of enthusiasm, determination, work ethic, resourcefulness, responsibility and ultimately pride.

"The event is a motivator for our staff and a learning experience for the youth. It's gratifying to organize and host this event plus work with so many people that share the same commitment to our youth."

Atlantic 4-H members who are 14 years of age and have a minimum of two years experience with the 4-H dairy and beef projects are eligible to attend the showcase.

Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture 4-H staff provide organizational assistance for the showcase on behalf of the Atlantic 4-H Committee. The public is welcome to attend and for more information, visit the 4-H website at www.gov.ns.ca/agri/4h/.
