The Navy: A Century in Art Exhibition at Maritime Museum

A travelling exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy will be on display at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax from Friday, Aug. 6 to Sunday, Oct. 24.

The Navy: A Century in Art was produced by the Canadian War Museum. The exhibit shares the legacy of the navy experience as it moves into a new century. From dramatic depictions of the Battle of the Atlantic to intimate portraits of life at sea and ashore, the works in the display vividly reveal this rich heritage.

The Navy: A Century in Art features a selection of paintings from many of Canada's leading war artists, including Arthur Lismer, Alex Colville, Anthony Law, and demonstrates how geography, history and war have shaped the Canadian navy. The exhibition represents four themes: the Canadian Navy, the navy at sea, the navy's wars, and its legacy.

"This exhibition is a testament to the important and diverse roles fulfilled by the Canadian navy over the past century," said Mark O'Neill, director general of the Canadian War Museum. "It is a privilege for us to be able to share treasures from our collections with Canadians across the country."

"It's an honour to have our museum host this exclusive travelling exhibition from the Canadian War Museum's Beaverbrook Collection of War Art. Having this collection of works by prominent Canadian artists makes this showing even more special to share with our visitors," said Kim Reinhardt, general manager, Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

"Over the next few months, museum patrons will see works by Arthur Lismer, Alex Colville, Anthony Law, Harold Beament, Donald C. Mackay, Ted Zuber and many other official and unofficial war artists."

The exhibition had its national premiere early this year in Calgary at the Military Museums.
