Tourism, Culture and Heritage (Dec. 2003 - Jan. 2011)

An innovative tourism development project in southwest Nova Scotia will benefit from an investment by the provincial and federal governments announced today, Aug. 13, at Université Sainte-Anne.

Stories from the Community is a project of the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores Tourism Association that showcases the area's culture and history.

The provincial government is contributing $65,000 from the Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency is investing $70,000.

"The province recognizes that tourism is an important industry with the potential to create good jobs that grow the economy, and we are proud to partner with the government of Canada to help the southwest region promote its unique assets," said Graham Steele, Minister of Acadian Affairs, on behalf of Percy Paris, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage.

"Our government is helping Southwest Nova Scotia showcase its tourism assets," said MP Greg Kerr, on behalf of Keith Ashfield, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "Our region is proud to be known for its rich fishing heritage, unique Acadian culture, and can-do attitude."

The Yarmouth and Acadian Shores Tourism Association is a collaborative effort of the municipalities of Argyle, Clare, and Yarmouth, the Town of Yarmouth, and local tourism operators. The organization is committing $37,000 cash and $37,600 worth of in-kind services to the project.

"We are very excited to be leading this innovative example of experiential tourism, which is one of the fastest-growing tourism sectors," said Larry Peach, general manager of the association.

The project has two components:

  • Savour the Local Sea markets the area's historic fishing industry to visitors seeking a unique experience that brings heritage to life.
  • Musique de la Baie celebrates Acadian music and cultural heritage at its new center at Université Sainte-Anne.

The funding is part of the commitment of both levels of government through Team West and Team Southwest to support sustainable economic development in the region.
