Nova Scotian businesses are opening their doors to new export opportunities as officials from Trinidad and Tobago visit the province this week.

The visit builds on the 1995 Memorandum of Understanding that prompted an analysis of Trinidad and Tobago's waste management needs. This week's visit includes site tours of private, municipal and provincial waste management facilities.

"Nova Scotia has become a world leader at diverting valuable materials from disposal," said Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau. "The ability to demonstrate our capacity first-hand is a great opportunity to promote the export of our waste management expertise."

Trinidad and Tobago Minister of Local Government Chandresh Sharma and ministry officials responsible for solid waste management also met with industry leaders.

"Trinidad and Tobago is a small island nation. Protecting our environment, now and for future generations, is a priority for us," said Mr. Sharma. "This visit provides us with a valuable opportunity to build on our existing partnership with Nova Scotia and learn first-hand about its state-of-the-art solid waste management and other environmental facilities."

The Trinidad and Tobago delegation will also visit with officials from the Emergency Management Office to discuss Nova Scotia's emergency management structure, and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations to learn about the province's system for handling routine interactions with individuals and businesses. The visit concludes on Thursday, Nov. 25.
