Minister Receives Hyde Report

Justice

Justice Minister Ross Landry acknowledged and thanked provincial court judge Anne Derrick for her work on the Hyde Fatality Inquiry and its subsequent report, which was received today, Dec. 8.

"This was a tragic incident," said Mr. Landry. "This report provides an opportunity for real and positive change in the system.

"I wish to convey my sympathy to the family and assure them that we will carefully consider the recommendations contained in this report as we move forward."

Judge Derrick was appointed in October 2008 to look into the death of Howard Hyde, who died while in custody at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in November 2007.

Judge Derrick was asked to make recommendations on:

  • the date, time and place of death
  • circumstances under which the death occurred
  • cause of death
  • manner of death
  • and any other matter which may arise from the inquiry.

The inquiry began in February of 2009 and concluded in June 2010. Once the report has been reviewed, the province will issue a response.
