Shoreline Trail for Graves Island Provincial Park

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Visitors at a popular Lunenburg County camping park will soon be hiking on an improved coastal walking trail.

The Department of Natural Resources has awarded a tender to Cobequid Trail Consulting to build a walking trail in Graves Island Provincial Park at a cost of $136,200.

"This is an exciting development for one of the most popular camping parks of the provincial park system," said Community Services Minister Denise Peterson-Rafuse, on behalf of Natural Resources Minister John MacDonell. "The island has breathtaking scenery, and the improved trail will add to the experience for families and park visitors."

The walking trail will be almost two metres wide with a variety of coastal viewing and resting opportunities. The trail is located in a sustainable location, above the old shoreline trail, which has been badly damaged by coastal erosion.

Clearing and grubbing work has begun on the eastern side of the island, and construction will proceed as weather permits. The project is expected to be completed before the summer.

The trail improvements are being cost-shared through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.
