Nova Scotians helping to build safer communities will be recognized with the Minister's Award for Leadership in Crime Prevention.

Business leaders and media, police officers and youth, community groups and individuals can be nominated for the award.

"The best way to stop crime is to prevent the opportunity for crime and criminal behaviour to develop in the first place," said Ross Landry, Minister of Justice.

The awards recognize people and organizations that demonstrate leadership in projects or community service that can help prevent crime.

"We want to celebrate those who are helping to build safer communities in our province," said Mr. Landry.

The Department of Justice is accepting nominations in six categories:

  • individual
  • youth
  • community group or organization

  • business community

More information and nomination forms are available at www.gov.ns.ca/just . The deadline for nominations is March 11.

The winners will be honoured at the Atlantic Co-ordinating Committee on Crime Prevention Conference on May 4–6, in Halifax.
