Province Announces Independent Review of Braemore Homes Corporation

Community Services

Community Services Minister Denise Peterson-Rafuse, today, Feb. 1, requested an independent review of Braemore Homes Corporation.

The province decided a program and operational review was needed after it investigated a case of abuse at the Sydney facility.

"We can only imagine how terrible this ordeal has been for the young man and his family," said Ms. Peterson-Rafuse. "Government has a responsibility to look after our most vulnerable people, and we take this responsibility very seriously. We will not tolerate abuse of any kind. We want to be sure we fully understand how and why this happened."

The review, by an independent party, will be presented to the department this spring.

The full extent of the review has not been determined, but will include programs and services offered, operations and staff training.

"Our investigation determined that this happened, and now we want to understand why this happened," said Ms. Peterson-Rafuse. "I look forward to getting the process underway as soon as possible and to hear the recommendations in the months to come.

"We will work with Braemore to ensure residents are safe and that they, and staff, are getting the support they need."
