Minister Thanks Pictou County Health Authority

Health and Wellness

Health and Wellness Minister Maureen MacDonald praised the Pictou County Health Authority today, May 31, for its handling of the evacuation of the Aberdeen Hospital.

The hospital was evacuated Monday evening after a bomb threat was received at 7:14 p.m.

"The Aberdeen Hospital staff and physicians worked quickly and professionally to respond to this situation," said Ms. MacDonald. "I thank them for their prompt action to keep patients and staff at the hospital safe."

Ninety-four patients were safely evacuated to Summer Street Industries, a location identified under Aberdeen's emergency plan. A few patients were also evacuated to Glen Haven Manor, a local nursing home.

There were no injuries or cancellations during the evacuation.

"I would also like to thank staff at Emergency Health Services as well as the other district health authorities and departmental staff for supporting Pictou County Health Authority," said Ms. MacDonald. "Thanks also to local police and fire departments, EMO, as well as to Summer Street Industries and Glen Haven Manor which provided temporary facilities and to Lawtons Drugs, which provided facilities and supplies."

While the evacuation was successful, Ms. MacDonald stressed the seriousness of evacuating a hospital and its potential to impact patients.

"Such a threat is a criminal action, not a hoax, and will be dealt with appropriately by the provincial justice system."
