New Bike Legislation Comes Into Effect

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

Nova Scotia roads will be safer for cyclists and motor vehicles with new sharing-the-road legislation that comes into effect today, June 1.

"There are many benefits to all Nova Scotians from active transportation," said Bill Estabrooks, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "This legislation puts into law good practices that need to be followed by both cyclists and motor vehicle drivers."

The legislation requires that drivers leave at least one metre of space when passing a cyclist, and that cyclists travel in single file. If it is safe to do so, motorists are allowed to cross a yellow line to give a cyclist the necessary one metre of space. Cyclists are required to stay to the right of a lane as long as it is safe to do so.
