Nursing Home Addition Opens in Port Hawkesbury

Health and Wellness

The province is ensuring seniors are able to stay in their communities longer with the official opening of the Chisholm Wing, a 12-bed addition to the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home.

With the addition, the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home is now home to 66 residents.

"This addition will enable residents to receive the care and support they need in a place that feels like home," said MLA Clarrie MacKinnon on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Maureen MacDonald today, Aug. 25. "It allows residents to be close to their families and friends in the community."

The Chisholm Wing reflects the province's new design standards which emphasize one and two-storey buildings with access to green space and homier surroundings. The design also enables couples who require nursing home care to live together in the same household.

"I am very thankful to have this great opportunity to live in this home now that I need some assistance," said resident Florence Hennessey.

The Chisholm Wing is a self-contained household with six nursing home beds and six residential care facility level beds. It has a kitchen, living room and dining room and residents have a private room with their own wheelchair accessible washroom.

"Today is a wonderful day for the residents, family, and staff of the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home," said Brian MacLeod, president of the MacLeod Group. "The opening of the Chisholm Wing is the culmination of two years of hard work by all involved and is a great addition to the community."

The addition will provide employment for 25 new employees.

The 12 beds opening at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home are part of the 1,000 new, long-term care beds that will be open by the fall in 14 new facilities and ten existing facilities throughout Nova Scotia.

Access to the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home and other provincial long-term care facilities is through the Department of Health and Wellness's Single Entry Access system. It can be reached by calling 1-800-225-7225.
