Government Improves Road Safety in Tantallon

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

The province continues to improve road safety installing centre-line rumble strips on a section of Highway 103 near Tantallon.

The strips are being installed from Exit 5 in Tantallon, at the end of the twinned section, for about 40 kilometres to the west at the start of the divided section of Highway 103 near Chester. The $80,000 project, contracted to Industrial Cold Milling, should be completed by Monday, Oct. 31.

"These new centre-line rumble strips will provide safer passing opportunities and increased separation from opposing traffic," said Bill Estabrooks, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "This is a pilot project, but if the strips have the desired impact, they may be used in other parts of the province."

Centre-line rumble strips can help reduce head-on incidents and oncoming sideswipes by 21 per cent and all crash by 14 per cent.

In recent years, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal has been placing shoulder rumble strips on portions of 100 series highways. A typical centre-line rumble strip has grooves cut into the road, with the yellow line painted over top of them.
