The province is supporting Canso in its efforts to ensure a brighter future for residents.

On Nov. 10, the province signed a letter of intent to support Canso's move from a town to become part of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough.

"While I understand how hard these decisions are, I'm pleased to see that Canso's council is moving forward with the best interest of its residents in mind," said John MacDonell, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "We will continue to work closely with Canso and the Municipality of the District of Guysborough to help provide a collaborative approach for the dissolution and rebuilding this community."

In September 2010, the Town of Canso applied to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board (UARB) to dissolve. The town and the municipality have been working with the province to reach a mutual agreement before the UARB hearing.

The province provided support for the transition, stabilized the tax rate and funded research.

"The decision to dissolve the Town of Canso was not an easy one for the town council," said Paul Horne, Deputy Mayor of Canso. "Ultimately, we want to do what is best for our community and ensure an appropriate and affordable level of municipal services to the community of Canso and surrounding area."

"The Municipality of the District of Guysborough council has worked towards building a sustainable financial plan that will assist the community of Canso and all municipal residents in moving forward," said Lloyd Hines, Warden of the municipality. "We will continue to build on the strong foundation we have established for the people in our communities."

If approved by the UARB, Canso's citizens, the geographic area and the town's infrastructure will become part of Municipality of the District of Guysborough.
