Coalitions Celebrate Aging Well Together Week

Health and Wellness

Nova Scotia's seniors are leading safer, healthier and more active lives thanks to more than 100 organizations that form 12 aging well together coalitions in the province.

During Celebrating Aging Well Together Week, which lasts until Saturday, Nov. 26, the province's coalitions promote strategies to help seniors age well.

"As our population ages, it's more important than ever to ensure seniors have safe, supportive and healthy communities in which to live," said Maureen MacDonald, Minister of Health and Wellness. "I commend these organizations for the work they do each day to improve the lives of seniors."

Government supports the provinces aging well coalitions through Community Links, an organization, that provides awareness, action and change, with a focus on falls prevention, physical activity and other factors that will promote healthy, age-friendly communities and quality of life for Nova Scotians.

"Aging well is about people staying connected and engaged in their communities, keeping physically active, eating well, and avoiding unsafe practices," says Sandra Murphy, executive director of Community Links. "The aging well together coalitions are working to create change in organizations and communities around Nova Scotia which support people to age well."

To kick off Aging Well Together Week, a photo contest was held encouraging seniors from across the province to submit photos of what it means to age well. Selected photos were used to create the 2012-2013 aging well together calendar, now available across the province.
