Snowfall May Cause Slippery Driving Conditions

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

Motorists are encouraged to check conditions before driving today, Nov. 23.

Snowfall amounts totaling 20-30 centimetres are forecast for much of Nova Scotia.

Drivers can check the latest road conditions before heading out by viewing highway webcams on the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal's website at www.gov.ns.ca/tran/cameras, by calling 511 or viewing mobile 511 (m511.gov.ns.ca) on their phones, and by checking the 511 website at http://511.gov.ns.ca/map/.

The province's road conditions/511 system has new terms to describe winter road conditions. Nova Scotia has adopted the Transportation Association of Canada's winter road conditions descriptions, developed to provide consistency across Canada for the traveling public.

The new terms are:

  • Bare-Dry: The road will appear black on the 511 web site. Most of the road surface is dry.
  • Bare-Wet: The road will appear black on the 511 web site. Most of the road surface is wet.
  • Partly Covered: The road will appear yellow on the 511 web site. Two wheels of a passenger vehicle are on a bare surface and the other two are on ice, packed snow, or loose snow.
  • Covered: The road will appear white on 511 web site. All wheels of a passenger vehicle are on ice, packed snow or loose snow.
  • Closed: The road will appear red on the 511 web site. The road is closed because road surfaces are impossible to travel due to continuous snow fall preventing snow removal or lane closures due to a collision.
