Shubenacadie Sam Predicts Spring on its Way

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Shubenacadie Sam says, despite the recent snow across the province, Nova Scotians will soon be enjoying spring.

The groundhog didn't see its shadow today, Feb. 2, which is supposed to mean an early spring.

Sam was the unquestioned star attraction during the annual Groundhog Day festivities at the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park, which included face painting and crafts for children.

Nova Scotia's time zone makes Sam the first groundhog to make a prediction in North America each year.

According to tradition, if Sam sees his shadow and runs back into his burrow, the province will get six more weeks of winter. If he stays out, spring is just around the corner.
